1. WHAT IS YOUKIE MAGAZINE? WHO IS IT FOR AND WHAT DOES IT COVER?
Youkie is a print magazine for curious cookies aged 8 to 12+. It’s created by and for kids, offering all preteens a bigger, brighter view of the world and their place in it.
We know girls don’t just want to be pretty in pink. Well boys aren’t just interested in blowing up aliens either. Kids are complex and we stand with youth, who are leading the way in challenging these narrowly defined types.
Youkie is chock-full of cool comics and short stories, features on everything from adventure and activism to science and sport, plus interviews with remarkable people of all ages, creative challenges, topical debate, puzzles, books, problems, posters, embarrassing moments and loads more. With absolutely NO ads or fast fashion.
Before Youkie there was Kookie. After publishing our beloved girl-led Kookie mag for five years, it was time to shake things up. Boys were always welcome to read Kookie, and many did. In fact, we think reading about girls in challenging, creative and leading roles is good for everyone! So we took the next obvious step and made sure all kids feel included by giving all kids presence on the page.
Today Youkie is a preteen place all for YOU.
2. WHAT CAN READERS EXPECT FROM YOUKIE MAGAZINE IN THE COMING MONTHS?
I can’t wait to get upcoming issues into the hands of Youkie readers. Our talented contributors are working on creative new comics and beautifully illustrated stories, as well as features that are going to help kids with their personal development (especially around screen use and emotional wellbeing).
We’ve got knock-out interviews coming up too and more reader involvement. Youkie is a platform for preteens to be seen and heard, and I’m looking forward to building that aspect of the mag even more.
3. IF YOUKIE MAGAZINE HAD A MOTTO, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Be YOU.
4. IF YOU COULD BE ANYONE FAMOUS FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Fame isn’t for me, so I’d choose to be someone who handles it beautifully. She’s worked hard to become the best person she possibly can be with her gift, never losing sight of her values. She makes being fit, strong, kind and calm under pressure look effortless. I’d be Ash Barty of course.
5. WHY SUBSCRIBE?
I’ll let our community explain. ‘The absolute best magazine for kids,’ a parent has written, ‘jam-packed full of coolness. Read from cover to cover and back again!'
Readers also write in to tell us what they like about the mag. Sometimes they express it better than we ever could. One 10-year-old wrote: ‘Thanks for making a magazine about what you CAN be, not what you SHOULD be.’
Exactly!
