Australia’s premier modified car magazine
Street Machine is the country’s biggest selling, most widely read and most respected modified car magazine. Combining great photography with accurate, expert coverage of the Aussie modified car scene and in-depth technical features, Street Machine celebrates Australia’s passion for older cars, V8s and the lifestyle that surrounds them.

BROADCAST
THE NSW modified car community has again found itself in the crosshairs of the authorities, with NSW Police and the RMS actively targeting owners of modified vehicles with regard to compliance issues.
Owners of modified vehicles are being issued with notices to present their cars for mandatory inspections at a predetermined time and place. Failure to comply with the notice results in cancellation of your registration and a hefty fine, whereas presenting your vehicle for inspection can lead to a red sticker defect which can only be cleared by a follow-up RMS inspection.
Some within the car community argue that avenues exist to have modified vehicles certified for street use, and that enthusiasts have an obligation to follow those processes to ensure their vehicles are compliant. Perhaps only those who have done…
DRAG NATION
THE first year of the National Drag Racing Championship (NDRC) is moving towards the pointy end after a fantastic season across the country in both Group One and Sportsman racing.
After more than a decade of turmoil in the sport, the NDRC has ushered in a unified championship with rounds held in every state and territory, bar Tassie and the ACT. To help Sportsman racers deal with the obstacles presented by geography, the NDRC has split the Sportsman season into Eastern and Western Conferences.
The Western Conference wrapped up at the Riverbend Nationals in April, while the Eastern Conference finals have effectively three meetings to go, with a double-header Nitro Champs (May 3-5) in Sydney, followed by the Winternationals at Willowbank (June 6-9).
The winners, runners-up and other highest-scoring racers of each conference…
HOT GOSSIP
FIRE!
IT HAS been a weird year for shed fires amongst friends and family of the Street Machine crew. We’ve had three big ones, all caused by electrical faults – specifically a 12v battery charger, a 240v-12v eight-amp power supply and a car battery under charge. All three were gnarly, but could have been worse, so this is just a timely reminder to fit your shed out with a smoke alarm, have extinguishers handy inside and outside the shed and to get your appliances and tools tested and tagged.
TRIBUTE SPECIAL
Matt Watts and his magnificent moustache are set to debut a new burnout machine at Meguiar’s MotorEx on May 4-5. The car in question will be familiar to those who follow the burnout scene closely, and this machine holds a special place…
HARDTOP HERO
SUPERCARS racer Cameron Waters is set to unveil his 1974 XB Falcon coupe at Meguiar’s MotorEx on 4 May, in an unveiling that both we and the Tickford Racing star have been looking forward to for quite a while.
At the time of writing, the car is in paint at Rides By Kam in Queensland, with head honcho Rob Zahabi taking on a last minute, do-or-die thrash to get it finished in time to have the covers pulled off at the Melbourne Showgrounds. “I’ve always loved Fords and cars,” Cam says. “Growing up, Dad was racing speedway and had a lot of cars himself so it’s in the blood, and that’s why I’ve picked a couple of Falcons to do up.”
We’ve been following the build since it began during the COVID…
LIAM BENNETT
LIAM Bennett’s stock-car-inspired 1964 Chevelle was one of our favourite spottos at the Hardass 1000, so much so we bailed the expat Kiwi up for a chat after the event to find out more.
This is a bloody cool Chevelle! What made you go with the stock-car styling?
I got inspired by all the original ones from the 70s, like the early Chevelles Dale Earnhardt raced, and the cars in The Last American Hero – the movie about Junior Johnson. During the COVID lockdowns I got bored and decided I wanted to do that to mine. I radiused the guards myself, and then had Dean at Indy Kustoms feather in the paint so it looked original. I found some rust in the rear when I started, so it was the perfect excuse…
BØRNING 3: ASPHALT BURNING 2020
THE third instalment in the Norwegian Børning trilogy, Børning 3: Asphalt Burning sees the often loose and irresponsible street racer, Roy Gundersen (Anders Baasmo) back with his trusty yellow ’67 Mustang, allegedly changed in his ways and getting serious as a family man.
With his wedding to Sylvia (Kathrine Thorborg Johansen) set for the following day, a pickled Roy become the victim of the ultimate cockblock at his own pre-wedding party: he’s tricked into laying a kiss on the sultry and dangerous Robin (Alexandra Maria Lara), who subsequently disappears.
A perplexed Roy tries to forget the night’s confusing encounter and focuses his energy on the next day’s joke ‘race’ between his friends up Norway’s stunning Trollstigen mountain road, where the ‘winner’ gets to claim the bride. All is jovial between Roy and…

LETTER OF THE MONTH
IN MEMORIAM
HI ANDREW, I received a letter in regard to the above subscription recently. I wanted to contact you to let you know the reason the subscription wasn’t renewed. My mum actually gifted this subscription to my husband for his birthday, and has done so for a number of years, from when we were married in 1984. She now has dementia and is in a nursing home.
My husband was an avid reader and fan of Street Machine magazine and had a collection dating right back. Sadly my husband passed away in May last year from a long battle with prostate cancer.
I just wanted to say that it was one of the last magazines my son read to him while he was in hospital in his last days,…
RIDE ON!
IT MAY not be the most accomplished flick Australia’s ever turned out, but the wholesome nostalgia appeal of BMX Bandits has given it a long lifespan. We recently shared our Ripper Car Movies review of the Sydney-shot flick on Facebook, and asked if you saw it at the movies way back in 1983.
Nathan Davey – Hell yes! Hoyts Queen Street Mall.
Shaun Queale – Even better: Mum brought home a screen-printed, knock-off BMX Bandits T-shirt from the Vic Market. I was king of the kids at primary school!
Todd Harrison – That’s rad! BMX Bandits was filmed where I grew up, when I grew up and the same year I got my first BMX.
Glenn Casey – I’m an extra in the flour scene; I was the oldest ‘kid’ there that day. I…
ENTER NIGHT
IT’S A BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED CAR WITH SOME MIND-BLOWING FABRICATION, CREATED IN A BACKYARD SHED
THE story of Boris Pacey’s HQ Sandman Doorslammer took quite a few twists and turns along its 15-year journey to completion, but when the covers came off at Motorvation 38, the wait and all the effort was rewarded handsomely. Not only did the car pick up a few trophies – most significantly People’s Choice – but it also broke the internet and had people talking for weeks. And while we don’t tend to feature many race cars, this one stands out for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it’s a beautifully presented car with some genuinely mind-blowing fabrication, created in a backyard shed. Okay, the shed might be a bit bigger than average, and it does have a full-on…
THIRD TIME’S a charm
IN AUGUST 2016, a fella named Jono Calautti drove his XD onto the Young Guns page of this publication. His Heron White streeter won lots of attention with its ruler-straight lines, fat ROH Modenas and one of the most sanitary engine bays we’ve ever seen in an 80s Falcon. “Let’s just say I’ve got a new combo in the works with more cubes,” he said back then. We’ve since learned he was really about to quadruple the power output!
Jono has been into cars since day-dot – thanks largely to his dad taking him to car shows in his XT GT – and after getting his licence he went on the hunt for something rowdy. “My old man found the XD sitting in the back of a suspension shop in Perth,”…
